Centroid and Moment of Inertia of Different Geometrical Sections | Engineering Mechanics Experiment #8

EXPERIMENT NO.8

OBJECTIVE:

To find the centroid and moment of inertia of different geometrical sections.

APPARATUS:

PROCEDURE:

1.      Take different geometric shapes and hang on the walls with nails.

2.      Place the plumb bob on a thread and tie it off.

3.      Hang the thread and plumb bob from the nail in front of the shapes.

4.      Use a pencil to draw a plumb line down the shapes where the thread touches. This marks your center line from that hanging point.

5.      Repeat step 3 and 4 in other places on the shapes.

6.      Also cut the cardboard into a strange shape.

7.      Punch a hole near the edge of the cut-out cardboard piece and hang it from a nail.

8.      Repeat step 3 and 4.

CALCULATIONS:

Locate centroid of different geometrical shapes analytically and also solve for their moment of inertia.

CONCLUSION:

Discuss the importance of centroid and moment of inertia.
