Reshaping Traffic of Karachi

In Karachi, there are lots of developments occurred during the span of last ten years. It is an undeniable fact, Karachi is reshaped with the opening of variety of brands and their outlets. Town planners and consultancies came in the market and they took initiative of construction of tall and high-rise buildings. Numerous investors invested large sum of money to give boom of building of apartments in Karachi. One side of the picture is so fascinating and attractive but the other side of the coin is not considered and nobody even think of it.
The positive side of the picture is that the openings
of branded outlets made Karachi so attractive and all the towns are become
self- sufficient as they are fulfilling that people do not need to go out of the
town for shopping and purchasing. The reason behind that everyone is getting
opportunity of purchasing the stuffs from his own area due to openings of
variety of branded and local shops in every town. One cannot deny this fact
discrimination is getting vanished from residents of Karachi. For instance,
people mostly visited Tariq Road and Hyderi for the purchase of clothing
includes wedding clothes, shoes, bedsheets etc. in the past. The conditions are
entirely changed now. People get their favourite brand in their own locality so
there is no need to move to other towns to get their grocery or shopping. Furthermore,
concept of inferiority and superiority among towns are at the end due to this
boom. Malir developed a lot during this time period and we can see variety of
outlets of numerous brands including Ideas, Gul Ahmed, Service and Stylo in
Malir. In the same way, more investors,
businessmen and politicians initiated to invest their huge sum of money to
construct shopping malls and markets. They constructed Metro, Imtiaz, Chase Value,
Lucky one, Hyper Star and Park Tower. In the beginning these malls were in
small numbers like only one and two in the Karachi. Things started to get
change with the passage of time. When these malls did good business so they
started to open more malls in different areas even in undeveloped towns or you
can say slum areas. In this way, people of these towns able to visit these
malls and they can effortlessly get variety of stuffs in variety of ranges from
lowest to highest rates. Now, it is accessible and convenient for all classes
of Karachites.
On
the other hand of the coin, the picture is so dark. As a transportation
engineer, these malls and shops are constructed without even considering the
fact that traffic comes out from these malls held responsible of huge number of
vehicles on the roads of Karachi. If we do not impose a full stop right now so it
will ultimately become complex problem. I regularly travel on the roads of Karachi for the
purpose of my work. The major issue I have gone through is that most of us get
into traffic congestion on different junks. Let’s take an example of the road
section from Nagan Chowrangi to Drigh Road Bridge crossing Sohrab Goth Bridge,
Nipa Bridge and Alladin Park. We will see traffic congestion near and before to
Luckyone Mall and at Neuplex Cinema. Moreover, we will see traffic jam in front
of Chase up and Imtiaz Shopping Mall if we take road section from Drigh Road
Bridge to Nagan Chowrangi. These are genuine issues of transportation and even
local people can analyze this issue. These types of constructions are severely
lacking transportation planning. For this purpose, transportation planning
should be practiced before construction of mega shopping projects which brings
huge mass on the roads. If it’s not performed properly so it should not be allowed
to construct. CDGK (Central District Government of Pakistan) should enforce
investors to provide alternate routes to the vehicles for entering in these
mega malls rather than coming from the front road or they have to construct
bridges for their own traffic. Another thing is that they should also have to
provide their own parking space as per traffic forecast. The routes defined in
this blog are hardly of 20 minutes to cover it with private vehicle but traffic
congestions on these different junks increase transportation time from 20 minutes
to 1.5 hour or it may be more. The situation gets pathetic in peak hours.
To
everything into consideration, Government organizations should enforce some law
abiding restrictions for the construction of shopping plazas and mega malls.
Traffic congestions increase travel time and generate mental stress among
residents of Karachi. This needs to be rectified and resolved these issues as
soon as possible. Some mitigation measures are provided in this blog on my own
observations and findings. Obviously, experts know more smart mitigation
measures to resolve traffic congestion issues from the roads of Karachi.
